ALS and NCLC Oddities Display

In the fall, ALS and NCLC teamed up to have a display collection of oddities we had lying around our house. There was a quite the collection of interesting pieces when it was all said and done.

ALS and NCLC 2011 Toy Drive

For the past few months, staff and board members from ALS and NCLC have been collecting toys for the Salvation Army. The toys were dropped off last week, and will soon be spreading cheer to boys and girls across the Iron Range.

Legacy "sculptures" at the Calumet Public Library

These are all identified as "cast works" by the sculptor/creator, Jeffrey Kalstrom. One piece celebrates "Abby," the Reading Education Assistance Dog (READ) that worked at the Calumet Library. A second piece depicts branches of a tree (including birds) and can be used for displays that change with the seasons. The third piece was much more difficult to photograph and sits above the entry door to the Library. It says "Calumet Library" and appears to be a section of a log, along with a wood saw.

Useful nuggets and resources that can be used for improving Library services to job seekers and entrepreneurs:

The presentation of 21^st Century Library Shifts provided a concise summary of how libraries are changing which I can use in discussing changes with my staff, my Library Board, and the City Council. (p 6 of the Project Compass Workforce Recovery Workshops booklet available on Web Junction.

The handout of 56 Things you (your library) can do provides a very useful quick list of ideas that can be further developed for supporting job seekers and small businesses.

I was looking for curricula for computer training classes and was able to connect with someone who could provide outlines.
One workshop participant reported that their local workforce center gave them copies of the Creative Job Search workbook.

Small business: The SCORE site has many resources for small business start-up and development, including business plan templates. www.score.org/resources

The Pathways (core services, job seekers, small business and personal finance) presented in the Project Compass Workbook provide a wealth of resources and examples for developing services. I will be spending time with the workbook and reviewing many of the examples to develop plans for our own services.

Then and Now: 2001 and 2011

On July 12, 2001, members of the ALS Governing Board, along with several local elected officials and ALS staff (above), broke ground on what would become the Arrowhead Library System headquarters building in Mountain Iron.

On October 21, 2011, the current members of the ALS Governing Board (above) gathered to celebrate another milestone, the final re-payment of all lease-revenue bonds used to finance the construction of the ALS building. The building and property are now completely owned by ALS. To mark the achievement, Beth Kelly, current President of the ALS Board, set fire to a symbolic "mortgage" (below).

Dazzling Dave is a full-time professional yo-yo performer, and one of 13 officially recognized National Yo-Yo Masters. He has circled the globe since 1998, storming audiences everywhere with his freakish tornado of whirling tricks and tips.

Kids will love his high energy, and his freestyle performance.

Each show lasts about 30 to 45 minutes, with a question and answer session that follows. The show is best for school age children, but younger audiences will enjoy it as well. After the program, Dazzling Dave will have yo-yo's for sale.

ALS to investigate a "discovery layer"

At the December 1, 2010 meeting in Mountain Iron with technology expert
Marshall Breeding, there was a strong consensus that ALS should first
pursue a so-called "Discovery Layer" before proceeding with the search for
a new integrated library system (ILS) to replace the current Horizon
system.

To quote one source, "[a] discovery layer provides a single point of
access to the full library collection across bought, licensed and digital
materials. Typically, a single search box is offered alongside a range of
other navigation features. Products which support this approach include
Worldcat Local, Summon, Primo Central, and the Ebsco Discovery Service,
as well as a range of institutional, national or other initiatives."

As discussed on December 1, the proposed discovery layer concept
would allow all patrons to use a single search to simultaneously
search the Horizon catalog at ALS, the Polaris catalog at the Duluth
Public Library, and a number of the many licensed databases available to
our users.

The ALS Board seemed very interested in the concept of a discovery
layer and here at ALS we will be discussing how to proceed with the
process of identifying a discovery layer that would work best for our libraries.
While the AquaBrowser product has been quite popular in the public library
market, there are several product options.

In a follow-up e-mail exchange with Mr. Breeding, he has offered a
few suggestions of libraries using discovery layers as the "front
end" for searching their their catalogs. See the list below (the name of

Richard Niss Honored

On December 18, the swimming pool at the Babbitt-Embarrass High School was dedicated as the Richard J. Niss Natatorium in honor of long-time swimming coach-teacher-business manager Richard Niss. In addition to his many other accomplishments and services to his community, Mr. Niss has been a member of the Babbitt City Council and the Babbitt Public Library Board, and he served on the Arrowhead Library System (ALS) Governing Board from 1997-2007, serving most of those years as the Board’s treasurer. Mr. Niss returned to ALS Board again in 2009 where he serves as a representative of the Upper St. Louis County library boards. Congratulations, Richard!

Love Your Library Envelope Stuffing

ALS staff and board members were on hand today to stuff envelopes for our annual "Love Your Library" fund raising campaign. About 3,000 envelopes were stuffed to distribute to Bookmobile and Mail-A-Book patrons beginning in January 2011.

If any member of the general public is interested in bidding on any of these items, please provide a sealed envelope with a sheet of paper inside that includes your name, address, telephone number, item number, item description, and the amount you would like to bid. If you have any questions about the item numbers, please contact Chris Carlson (ccarlson@arrowhead.lib.mn.us) or 218-741-3840 at ALS. There is no minimum bid. Bids must be received by Shari Fisher by the end of the day on Friday, December 17^th. Bids will then be opened on Monday, December 20^th. Winning bidders will be notified on Monday, December 21, and will be given instructions on making payment and obtaining their item or items. Any items remaining will be brought to the landfill or disposed of via recycling.

Marshall Breeding ILS Replacement Workshop

Marshall Breeding was at the Mountain Iron Community Center on Wednesday, December 1 for a presentation to interested staff from ALS member and Horizon libraries about the future of ILS systems and functions. Almost 50 people were in attendance, which was a very good turn-out in light of the winter weather.

I Love My Librarian Award deadline: September 20

This award invites library users nationwide to nominate librarians in public libraries, as well those in school and academic libraries. It is an opportunity for library users to tell how librarians make a difference in their community.

Thanks to the generous support of Carnegie Corporation of New York, 10 librarians will win $5,000 and be honored at an awards ceremony in New York in December, hosted by The New York Times.

For tools to help let people in your community learn about the award, see the free promotional tools on the "Promotional Tools for Librarians" link on the award website. In 2008 and 2009, nine

Poetry and Music

Join Bart and Ross at the Virginia Public Library at noon on April 29th or at Grand Rapids Area Library at 7 pm.

Bart and Ross will, also, be at the Bovey Public Library on April 30th at 1 pm.

Poetry Reading in Grand Marais

Join Yvonne Rutford, Ryan Vine, and Julie Gard at 7:00 PM on April 9th for a poetry reading at the Grand Marais Public Library.

Yvonne Rutford's poetry collection, This Fragile Nest, was published in 2009. Her work is known for its humor and heart, and for her devotion to the environment.

Ryan Vine is the author of Distant Engines, winner of a 2005 Weldon Kees Award. Vine's work is urban and urbane, energetic and adventurous.

Julie Gard has published short fiction prose poetry. She has received grants from the Fulbright Foundation, the Arrowhead Regional Artists Council, and the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund. She works with found objects, old photographs and thrift shopdicards to create text that speaks her version of the truth.

Girl Singers of the Hit Parade Concert has Tickets available at the Door

There are two activities featured by the Arrowhead Library System for Sunday, March 7th.

The Lollipop Concert of the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra is at the DECC at 3 PM. A few free tickets may still be available at your local public library. Bus tickets are available from Virginia, Eveleth, and Gilbert Public Libraries.

The Border Concert Association in International Falls has Circus INcognitus at 7:30 PM at Backus Auditorium. A few free tickets might be available at the Virginia and Ely Public Libraries.

DSSO (Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra) at Babbitt and Ely on Feb 12th

The Music to You program of the DSSO will be bringing The Timeless Beauty of Harp and Flute to the Babbitt Public Library on February 12, 2010, at 2 PM, and to the Ely Public Library at 4 PM.

Using the modern flute and harp, images from the past, actual instruments from other times and places, and music for flute and harp, these fine musicians will explore the question of why human beings have been music-makers since the beginning of time.

Teens and You Tube

From an MLA 2009 session, "Putting the You in You Tube," I am sharing some quick and not very costly ideas to do with teens and tweens using a flip camera. ALS has a flip camera library staff can borrow.

1. Hold a teen video contest instead of a writing contest. There is no need to purchase editing software. It is available free on the web. Have the kids make a 1 to 5 minute video. They have to mention the name of the library, and one of the shots has to be in the library or outside the library showing the library's name. The teens post the videos on You Tuble. Have the staff judge the videos. Teens can work as individuals or as a group. (The teens open their own account on You Tube and follow the copyright posted on You Tube).

2. Collaborate with your local cable company to donate their time to teach the teeens/tweens how to do video taping. Session 1--they pick the subject. Session 2--they do the storyboard. Session 3--they do the editing. This idea is more time-consuming.

Twin Cities Public Television (TPT) has released the Minnesota Video Vault (online at http://www.mnvideovault.org/). The vault provides access to hundreds of videos and TPT productions, from short clips to lengthy shows.
The "Educators" button allows you to sort by very broad K12 areas (e.g., Social Science, Science, or Language Arts), then focus by "grade level,"
then "strand" (e.g., Minnesota History or US History), and then by "sub strand" (e.g., under the Minnesota History "strand" you can select "sub strands" like the "Civil War and Dakota War" or "Contact and Fur Trade").

The Arrowhead Library System (ALS), based in Mountain Iron, Minnesota on the edge of the BWCA, serves rural residents in a seven‑county area and coordinates cooperation among 29 autonomous member public libraries, is seeking a Technical Services Librarian (a contract position) to manage a project that will transform the Technical Services department into an efficient and modern unit. The project will be based on a study conducted by OHIONET, which was completed in March of 2009. This manager will be responsible for planning and overseeing the transition of the Technical Services department into a more effective and efficient service provider for library patrons. A successful transition will require that the duties and responsibilities of current staff members evolve, shift, and change. These changes are being made in order to maximize library resources in the current economic climate, and provide the best possible services to ALS libraries. This position is expected to last two years.

Requirements: An ALA-accredited master's degree in library science. Minimum of two years professional cataloging experience. Public library and/or Bookmobile experience is highly desirable. Arrowhead Trustees Play Wii Rock Band

The Arrowhead Library System Governing Board Members seemed to enjoy their morning of playing Wii Rock Band, Wii Tennis, seeing a Sony e-book reader, learning about the iPhone and the iPod, and using Skype.

One of the trustees remarked that her 90+ year old mother was playing Rock Band in the Nursing Home, and now she knows what her mother is talking about!

The wii tennis team of four probably had the most fun of the day.

Teens can participate in "Express Yourself @ Your Library."

Adults will "Master to Art of Reading."

Recent studies from Pew Internet & American Life Project show that, on average, 8-18 year olds spend more than6 hours per day using technology including TV, DVDs, video games, audio media, and computers. “Teen Tech Week is a way for librarians and educators to collaborate with and educate teens about technology,” says Rebecca Patton, Public Library Consultant. . “Over the last several years the library’s role in increasing technology literacy has become more and more important, equal to that of reading literacy.”

Teen Tech Week is a national initiative sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association.

Fund Raising Campaign Underway

The “Love Your Library with a Gift” fund raising campaign is underway again. Now more than ever we need your support. When times are tough, people head to the library. Libraries are busier now than they have been in recent years. According to the New York Times, fewer people bought books, CD’s and DVD’s in 2008 than they did the year before. Checkouts of these items from libraries are up all across the country, as well as requests for new library cards.

This yearly campaign helps Mail-A-Book, the ALS Bookmobile and several participating libraries in raising funds to purchase new materials.

Learning New Technologies

22 library staff from public, academic, and school libraries learned about new technologies under the leadership of Maurice Coleman on October 14, 2008 at the Arrowhead Library System. Staff know how to set up a wii and Rock Bank, take pictures with a flip camera and a digital camera, navigate with a GPS, download music to an iPod, and load an ebook reader. Staff have commented, "This is the best workshop ever!"

Maurice Coleman will be coming to Arrowhead Library System on October 14, 2008, to show library staff how to use various technological devices, such as the GPS, Sony E-Reader, iPod, MP3 player, web cam, digital camera with video, and wii.

Maurice Coleman is currently the Technical Trainer at Hartford County Public Library (http://www.hcplonline.info/) located in the North Eastern corner of Maryland. His job is to help staff leverage new and existing tools and technologies in an innovative library system; to provide group and individual training in a variety of areas to library staff; and to foster communication between geeks and non-geeks.

The Crime Wave will be at the Arrowhead Annual Meeting

The Crime Wave will be the program for the Arrowhead Library System's Annual Meeting on May 13.

There's almost no truth to the rumor that the members of the Minnesota Crime Wave met because they have the same parole officer. Established in the fall of 2000, the Crime Wave consists of mystery writers Ellen Hart, Carl Brookins, and William Kent Krueger. Between them they have published more than thirty novels and have received nearly two dozen local, regional, and national awards for their writing. They have toured the country several times, presenting over a hundred events and workshops at libraries, bookstores, conferences, and book festivals.

Ellen Hart, a trained chef, is author of the Jane Lawless mystery series, which features a culinary detective. Hart has also written novels featuring food critic Sophie Greenway. Both series are set in Minnesota's Twin Cities.

Carl Brookins, a former academic and an avid sailor, is the author of three mystery series. The Tanner-Whitney series features a married pair of sailing sleuths. The Sean Sean series features a very short, very funny, and sometimes very dark private detective with an identical first and last name. And his most recent offering, Bloody Halls, introduces a series with an academic setting.

William Kent Krueger writes the Cork O'Connor mystery series, which is set in the great northwoods of Minnesota and features a protagonist who is part Irish and part Ojibwe. His stories often deal with the clash of cultures.

Arrowhead Library System Employee "Green Theme"

Arrowhead Library System and North Country Library Cooperative Staff gathered green items together for an eye-pleasing display in March as shown here. The display was open to all contributors. I am told a green dollar bill showed up after a board member happened to walk by. Green for Saint Patrick's Day? Green for Spring? Green for Easter? Green for recycling and thinking green? Well, it was a composition of these ideas and more, so it was all of the above plus others not listed.

Teen Gamers in the Library Stacks

Did you know digital natives use thumbs to dial their cell phones. Do you use thumbs or fingers?

24 percent of the population over age 50 play games. Boomers like Bridge, Chess, Checkers, and Wii Bowling.

80 percent of teens play games online.

DDR teaches teens creative expression by allowing them to choose their own songs. It helps them build self-esteem by giving them the skills to call themselves a "gamer."

Kids that play games for 1 hour spend 4 hours doing more research using books and websites. Example: kids that played the SIMS 1 hour spent 4 hours looking at architural books and other resources.

13 percent of libraries hosted video game programs in 2007. Games to choose for tournaments: wii sports, DDR, super mario.

Downloadable Audio Books

Good news for iPOD users. OverDrive will have downloadable audio book format availabe in Summer 2008 for Mac users. Watch for this exciting format on our website with our download titles. OverDrive had a demonstration at the Public Library Association conference in Minneapolis.

The Arrowhead Library System has acquired new subscriptions to two more popular electronic databases: ChiltonLibrary.com and the Gale Virtual Reference Library. They're free with your library card.

Chilton's is well-known by car do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiasts because these books have been available in the library for years. Now you don't have to lug the books home. When you search for your car's year, make, and model through the database, you'll get all the information you need to maintain or repair your vehicle. Print it out and take it to your car with you, making your own notes on your pages, if you wish. (You couldn't do that with the books.)

The Virtual Reference Library from Gale consists of nine online reference books, like the College Blue Book, which has scholarship information. Take a look at the wealth of reliable, free information.

To access these, go to our website's homepage at http://www.arrowhead.lib.mn.us. Click on "Services for Library Patrons" in the left column, then "Magazines, Newspapers and Other Databases." New Locations for Bookmobile Service

Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant added six schools to the regional online catalog

Six school media centers participated in an E2T2 grant that was completed October 30, 2007, to add their collections to the Arrowhead Library System regional catalog. This grant was a federally funded program through the No Child Left Behind program. The participating schools are:

Eveleth-Gilbert Senior High
Eveleth-Gilbert Nelle Shean and Junior High
Eveleth-Gilbert Franklin Elementary
Cook County Middle/High
Cook County Sawtooth Elementary
Ely Washington Elementary

Each media center received grant funding to purchase computer equipment for the media centers. The media center specialists, other staff, and some volunteers, converted over 58,000 records to the standard Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) format. Now students in these media centers have access to over 1 million items in the regional catalog from their media center computers or from home if they have Internet access. Beyond that, they also have access to the statewide MNLink Gateway. They can have the items delivered right to their media centers.

In summary of comments received from the grant process, students are using the media centers. Many are reading for fun now that they have such a wide access to materials. However, students probably need more information literacy skill building. Students are still "googling" to find information. Even adults tend to “google” to find information. Google has bonus features, such as word suggestions if a search word is misspelled. Online catalog and database vendors need to build more of these features into their search portals to make searching easier. The current Arrowhead Library System online catalog vendor, SirsiDynix, has started the process to do that with a recent announcement of its partnership with Brainware Incorporated. Besides searching for materials using the online catalog, students need to be able to decipher legitimate content from false information on the Internet. For example, information literacy skills help a student understand that a ‘.gov’ site has legitimate information whereas a .com site might require more analysis to determine legitimacy. Additionally, an online database carries journals with authoritative content on which one can place more reliance on legitimacy. Nonetheless, students who are reading for pleasure are building reading and writing skills. Fiction novels and special interest non-fiction such as hunting/fishing books also contribute to the life-long learning process.

The October, 2007, edition of American Libraries included an article titled “Teens and the future of reading,” written by Michael Cart (Vol. 38 Issue 9, p52-54, 3p). This article discusses the Harry Potter effect and how teens are being drawn back to reading because of books such as the Potter series that capture their interest. Teens are finding books fun. Educators are beginning to look at this phenomenon as a relationship between reading proficiency and reading for pleasure. A National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) study will underscore this relationship. The NEA Office of Research and Analysis Director Sunil Lyengar states, “People who read for pleasure do well academically.” Information is available about the NEA To Read or Not To Read study at http://www.arts.gov/news/news07/TRNR.html. The positive impact of reading is highlighted.

Students at the six (6) media centers that participated in this grant program have a competitive advantage in having access to materials when compared to media centers that operate on stand alone automation systems that are not connected to other libraries.

Of course, the media centers could not have participated without the support of their administrators and school boards. Hats off to them and the media center specialists for making this a successful project.
